When it comes to teaching your child or children maths, ones work is guaranteed not to be easy. This may be as a result of trying to juggle work hours with the child’s assignment hours or simply because Mathematics (called Maths in short form) has been viewed by many as very difficult, therefore we tend to delve into the main part of it and in turn cause confusion.
Bearing in mind that children need to be taught, here are a few pointers on how to easily teach a child mathematics
- Go back to the Basics
A lot can be said for mathematics so when the basics is mentioned with regards to it, one should note that the beginning is what has been referred to. A known basic tool for learning maths is the ‘Times Table’. This can improve a child’s learning capability in maths. By reciting the times table, the child will be conversant with multiplication, division and square roots.
Example: Multiplication–> 6×6=36 or 6×7=42.
Division–> 36/6=6 or 42/6=7.
Square roots–> square root of 36=6.
The multiplication table or the times table helps the child to easily remember most figures whether its in roots, division or multiplication. Therefore, going back to the basics will make teaching that child easy and also improve the child’s learning ability in maths.
- Use of objects or a liked sport
Teaching a child is not the easiest task but when one finds what the child likes in terms of objects or sports then learning maths may have been made a bit easy. This is because most times people find things they love or pay attention to all the time, likewise kids. Finding that attention grabber will help you teach a child maths. If a child likes football, then he/she probably knows how many players make up a team. the best thing to do here is to utilize this hobby and fit it into the learning plan.
- Learn to be Patient
No child is dumb in maths but one cannot throw out the fact that a child might have difficulty learning it on the spot. When difficulty in learning is the case, then the grown up teaching the child should try to avoid shouting or talking the child down. That will lower moral rather than boost it. That will also lower the child’s learning capabilities so in order to teach a child maths, one should be patient. Patience will help one find out where the child’s weak points are and also help one choose the right alternatives when teaching that child maths.
Most times, what a child needs is someone to make the effort and teach him or her to understand. It may take more than one time to grasp mathematics but eventually and at some point the child will learn what is being taught because in truth, no child is dumb. Taking the child in question back to the basics, ensuring that their attention is grabbed and being patient can help one to teach a child or any child mathematics.
