This is a new turf in the life of a rising individual, the thought of being grilled by an individual you know nothing about can create uneasiness, especially in a saturated market like Nigeria where institutions pump out graduates without adequate employment opportunities, but by taking these few key preparation steps listed below, you will be on your way into your first appointment.
You Must Have a Resume
A résumé is a well typed paper that contains information about you, your skills and background, this is the document you will use to secure a new appointment, which includes your personal information (name, address, contact information, qualifications and so on). This is what you will submit before your interview.
Know Your Environment
You need to have an above-average knowledge about the organization. There are vital things about any establishment that a prospective worker has to know, you can know more if you Google (search online) the name of the establishment or ask people who work there. This would help you gather helpful information. Also you need to know what the job you are applying for requires, this will help you prepare well so you can meet expectation.
Have Set Goals
Before a man embarks on a journey, he must have a set of things he has put his mind on to achieve from the journey. This is an important driving force that helps you focus on your interview. As an individual aspiring to get a job in an establishment, you must have goals you have planned to achieve in your new position. Goals are desired outcomes you wish to achieve from an action. This will be a starting point for your work and also a stepping stone to great heights in your new job. Having goals make you confident of your capabilities. Also the interviewer can ask why you desire to work in that establishment. This preparation will come in handy.
You Need a Little Practice
A driver does not just become one by putting a car on the road, you need to equip yourself with knowledge based on your résumé and research you have made about the establishment, revise what you have learnt and prepare for possible questions.
This is a big step you are taking in the story of your life so it is important. You must have arranged your interview cloth two days before, choose mild colours not too shiny and not dull, and on the day before the interview, watch what you eat so you do not upset your stomach and health. And sleep early on the night before the interview.
In a corporate environment, corporate dressing is most acceptable. Make sure your cloth is clean and well pressed. But it depends on where you are applying. Your appearance matters.
On Your Big Day:
- Make sure you arrive before time, if the interview is by 8am, make sure you leave home early enough so you can be at the venue at least 30minutes before time.
- Before you go in, try a little breathing exercise
- Be polite
- Be calm and orderly
- Make eye contact with your interviewer often( this will show your confidence)
- Don’t carry a hard face (smile)
- Have a pen and paper with you to take down important information while you are with the interviewer
- When asked a question, be brief but articulate
- And after a successful interview, thank the interviewer for spending his time interviewing you.
Congratulations on your first appointment!
