Day after days new nutritional drinks and beverages emerged from it production factory and find its way into the market and people are so much interested in having a taste of it to feel it. Most of this drinks are refined drinks and some times to get it, it’s so expensive beyond the reach of an average Nigerian trying to put things together for his or her family.
Mostly the well known beverages is mostly affordable by the well to do, of course they have it every now and then.
Do you know that there is a beverage drink that is of more nutritional value than the well known? Easy to get, and of course affordable to all irrespective of the class. I believe you all know the drink or beverage by now. It’s called Zobo.
Zobo its a nutritional value drinks. It is well known for it nutritional and medicinal value. And it is a type of drink that is gotten from a plant called Roselle which belong to the plant family of Malvaceae. It’s known by the Yorubas as Isapa, Oj in Igbo and Mnyanya in Hausa. It is of two type; the red and the white one. What is mostly used, is the fleshy calyces of the Roselle plant that surround the bloom of the plant that contain the seed as a protective Calyx. The fresh white fleshy Calyces is always used for soup, mostly Egusi soup. While the red Calyces used for our local beverage drink “Zobo”. This plant is grown in every part of the country and the dry red fleshy Calyces can be gotten from the market.
The following are needed in making the zobo drink….
1. 4 milk tin cups of dry fleshy Calyces of red Roselle plant .
2. Vanilla flavour = four spoonful.
3. Pineapple juice (180 ml).
4. Kanaberi (a local flavour)
7. 2 litres of water.
Direction of Preparation
First we need to extract the juice of the pineapple.
Note: We will be preparing 4 litres of Zobo Drink. And in this case we shall be making use of two whole pineapple fruit. With the knife, peel the pineapple and cut into smaller pieces and then pour into the blender. Add a little water and blend. After blending, pour it in the sieve and sieve it to get the juice out. The pineapple should be of 180ml. Then keep aside to be used later. The ginger to be used should be grind to powder.
After this, set a clean pot on the stove and pour in 2 litres of water, add in the red Calyces, kanabenri flavour, and the Ginger. Cover it and leave to boil for 15 minutes. Drop it and allow to cool.
Then sieve it into a clean container. Add four spoonfuls of Vanilla flavour and the extracted pineapple juice. Adding of sugar is optional because, some person don’t like it with sugar. But if you want sugar, you can equally add to taste and stirred properly. After pouring the pineapple juice the Zobo should be getting to 4 litres at that. Pour it into two, 2 litres container each and store in the refrigerator to chill. Our Zobo nutritional drink is ready.
